Owen Theatre

The Owen Theatre in Conroe, Texas, stands as a cultural gem, captivating audiences with its rich history and vibrant performances. Nestled in the heart of downtown Conroe, this historic venue, with its distinctive curved, Art Deco styling, has been a cornerstone of the local arts scene since its opening in 2008. Located at 225 Metcalf Street on the site once occupied by the Weisinger Pontiac/GMC dealership, the current building was constructed in the 1930s when Conroe was fueled on the oil and logging industries. After the Weisinger family eventually sold it, it became the Mabry Firestone Dealer store, and, in the 1970s, White’s Auto Store.

Montgomery County eventually purchased the building to use for courtrooms and county election offices. With the help of civic leaders who conducted an extensive fundraising effort, the City of Conroe next bought it and converted it into a 250-seat theatre. In 2008 when renovations were complete, the theatre was dedicated and named for civic leader Rigby Owen Jr and his wife Lucinda for their service to the Arts community in Conroe and Montgomery County.

Operated by The Players Theatre Company, which is dedicated to promoting and supporting the Arts in Conroe and the surrounding area, the Owen Theatre hosts productions, from classic plays and musicals to cutting-edge contemporary performances. Local theater groups and schools regularly grace the stage, providing a platform for aspiring actors, directors, and technicians to showcase their skills. The intimate setting of the Owen Theatre creates an immersive atmosphere, allowing the audience to feel connected to the performers.

Beyond its role as a performing arts venue, the Owen Theatre welcomes the community for

educational programs, presentations and workshops. As a hub for cultural exchange, the Owen Theatre contributes to the vibrant tapestry of Conroe’s arts and entertainment scene. Its impact reaches far beyond the confines of its walls, leaving an indelible mark on the community and fostering a sense of pride among its residents.

The Owen Theatre stands as a testament to the enduring power of the Arts. Its storied past, commitment to local talent, and dynamic programming make it a cherished institution, enriching the cultural landscape of Conroe and leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who experience its magic.
